It's been a long time since I've been to LA, but I asked some friends and
here are some initial suggestions from a friend in Grass Valley, CA:
Definitely the Huntington museum and gardens

Also the Getty Museum is worth it for some rather large stylized plantings.
Also the nursery at the Theodore Payne foundation (natives)

This lady is brave to come from France and hit the LA freeways!
