Hi Chantel,
Some gardens to consider (remember "Los Angeles" is a big place) -
The garden at the Norton Simon Museum (Pasadena) is a small interesting
garden around a lily lake, inspired by Monet's Giverny. And the art
collection is maybe the best in LA.

The Huntington (also Pasadena) as mentioned has a great desert garden and
interesting tropical specimens in addition to a rose collection, Japanese
garden and some trees that you might never see anywhere else.
For California natives - Rancho Santa Ana is the place to go - large
collection of natives used in formal plantings and a large undeveloped area
but it is farther out east in Claremont http://www.rsabg.org/. Theodore
Paine is really for buying plants as their display area is limited.
