In the mail today I received something very interesting. It was a
large card with an image of a weevil on it, Diaprepes abbreviatus.
Apparently it is a major pest, and some of its favored foods include
avocado, citrus, hibiscus, loquat and oak. I can see why the
California Department of Food and Agriculture sent these warning
cards out about it. They are a pretty distinct insect, so it shouldn't
be hard to identify, but I can only imagine the damage these things
can do, especially since the grubs feed on roots and can kill a tree.
Have any of you other Californian gardeners gotten one of these cards?
