Michael Wink's new poisons book describes the symptoms of Melianthus
poisoning as "nausea, salivation, foaming, vomit, colic,
gastro-intestinal disturbance, purging and exhaustion, with the usual
respiratory and cardiac symptoms (arrythmia, hypertension, coma and
cardiac arrest)associated with heart glycoside poisoning"
All of which is reminiscent of Xenophon's account of Kyros' mercenaries
being laid low by the toxic Rhododendron honey of Pontus in 400BC.
Apparently they recovered, though given Wink's warning, I wouldn't be so
optimistic about the after-effects of spreading Melianthus honey on my
bread and butter.

I ask mostly because I see conflicting
reports about whether the nectar is toxic or not.
