I'm moving

Dear Meditophiles,

I've been lurking for a while, mainly because I've been frantically getting
things sorted out ready to move to a new job. This will be in the United
States, at the Missouri Botanical Garden, so I will have the chance to build
up a new collection of Mediterranean plants in the not entirely
Mediterranean climate of St. Louis, Missouri. All my existing Greek and
Cretan plants are now at London's Chelsea Physic Garden, but I have many
little packs of seeds which I'll be trying to raise when I find somewhere
suitable to live.

I'll be leaving the U.K. on May 19, and will temporarily unsubscribe from
medit-plants on 12 May, my last day in this job at the Natural History
Museum in London. When I get back online, at mobot.org, I'll re-subscribe.

Incidentally, my parents' garden this week has several beautiful flowering
species peonies, all grown from seeds sown in 1988 and 1989: white P. clusii
subsp. clusii & subsp. rhodia, yellow P. mlokosewitschii and the tree-peony
P. lutea subsp. ludlowii, and also deep pink P. mascula. The Cretan P.
clusii subsp. clusii is deliciously scented of nutmeg and cinnamon!

There is also a stunning patch of Cretan Tulipa doerfleri, which spreads by
underground stolons and exists in Crete as a cornfield weed. Each stem is
about a foot high with large, deep red flowers, particularly sumptuous when
backlit by the sun. The Turkish T. armena var. lycica has just finished:
this is also red but much smaller, with wavy-edged leaves.

Best wishes to everyone, Nick.
