Re: Anyone growing banksias from seed?

I've recently had my first try at it with good success. Have propagated
Banksia ericifolia, B. speciosa, and B. grandis (as well as Hakea
scoparia). Opened the Banksia cones in a 350 degree F. toaster oven
watching through the glass door until the valves opened. Took out the
thin little seeds with their tissue-papery black wings with tweezers and
placed them without soaking on top of moist potting soil (containing NO
fertilizer) and covered them thinly with perlite. Put the pots in
plastic bags and placed them on an 80 degree F. heat mat (on top of a
water heating unit or refrigerator would also serve). They all
germinated within three weeks at about a 50% germinaation rate (100%
with the Hakea). My references said to transplant as soon as true leaves
appeared, so I did. (See ENCYCLOPOEDIA OF AUSTRALIAN PLANTS by Elliott
and Jones). Haven't fed them yet but they're doing well without-- the
largest ones now about ten inches tall in gallon pots. I'm told any food
with NO phosphorous is okay, best used at half strength on young plants.
Good luck to you. Wallace Gorell, Berkeley, California, USA
