Hello Everyone,
Several of you have asked me about the Flora of China Project, so here is
a very brief description.
The project is to produce an English language flora describing all 30,000
seed-bearing plants and ferns occurring in China. The printed version
will consist of 25 volumes (of which three have been published so far).
There is also information held in databases, Web pages, and volumes of
illustrations will also be produced. The Flora is an expanded version of
the Chinese language Flora Republicae Popularis Sinicae.
There are four US editorial centres, plus four in China, and one in the UK, so
it is a truly international and intensely collaborative project. For much
more information (including many nice images of Chinese plants), see the
following URL:

There is also a Flora of China Newsletter, which I will be jointly
editing. There is a link to this on the Web site.
I should just point out that I have been in this new job for only a week, so am
not yet completely familiarized with all aspects of the project! I've
not yet visited China, but hopefully will do so later this year, or in
1998. It sounds a really fascinating place, somewhere I've always fancied
exploring (but the same goes for the US, which is also new to me --
weekends are going to be busy from now on, I think!)
Nick.
