We have restrictions against the use of irrigation systems after 7 or 8
Oclock in the morning and before 6 in the evening, I think thats the
right times. Basically the idea is to water in the coolest time of the
day to maximise water into your garden and minimise water loss to
evaporation. Hence you can shorten your irrigation times.
You can use a hose to hand water any time, but not sprinklers!
The newspapers did surveys of water consumption and found, suprise
suprise, that the wealthy areas were the biggest consumers of water and
the worst abusers of the watering restrictions. (excess water bills
meant nothing to these people, I keel over if I see one for more than a
$150)
Not they they had more showers or baths mind, just whopping great
gardens and lawns with automatic irrigation systems that they
programmed, (or didn't) and then forgot about!
My gardens get watered every 3-4 days for 15 Minutes, the shadehouse
every day in summer but for only 7 minutes. I haven't lost any plants
to underwatering accept a few pots that were missed when a sprinkler
clogged up!!! I have very few pot plants though as they take more work
than the whole garden.
I am Basically a very lazy gardener, I use plants that need little to no
pruning, little water, (large areas of the garden never get watered) and
if a species won't grow under these conditions rip it out and try
something else.
The neighbours reckon it's a strange garden, but it's shady, green, uses
a fraction of the water they do, very little fertilizer and very little
work after the plants are established.
What more could you want for a lazy type gardener? :-)
