Joe,
It's better to say that MOST plants are indifferent to excess nutrients
beyond their needs. But the optimal fertilizer will vary, and it's worth
using a mix appropriate to your needs. I grow alpines, and it's more
important to get good root growth than maximal top growth. So I use a
balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10, rather than one with higher nitrogen.
Beyond that, toxicity [like proteas and orchids on P], and pH/available
iron may dictate your choice...
