wildflower lawn disasters

We are experiencing this right now in Berkeley. Last year, the city
reworked the  median strip along the full length of University Ave (the
main street into the center of town from the freeway) to have native trees
and shrubs...and California native wildflowers and grasses. For much of the
spring, it was block after block of glorious California Poppies, plus other
wildflowers and waving green grasses. Now every block looks like an
abandoned lot full of dead weeds with some tough trees and shrubs
struggling to survive in the middle. REALLY UGLY!!!
