My next door neighbor cuts back her California poppies almost to the base
just as the main growth is getting all floppy and covered with powdery
mildew (like, right about now). If done carefully, leaving at least some of
the tiny new growth near the center, the poppies regrow, and rebloom off
and on almost to winter with no summer water.
