Re: Moving a palm

Hi all!

Barry according to my notes Queen Palm (Syagrus romanzoffianum) is "noted
for its ease of transplanting at an advanced size".  Alexander Palm
(Archontophoenix alexandrae) also "transplants reliably".
The best time to move palms is Spring or Summer, because the roots
regenerate better in warmer weather. Before moving mark the north side of
the palm so you can replant with the same aspect.  Try to cut the roots
cleanly. You need to remove any dead fronds, and be very careful not to
damage the trunk when transporting, as palms can't callus over an injury.
Maybe wrap the trunk in something eg. underfelt.
Water well after replanting, to settle soil and remove air spaces from
around the roots. Depending on the size of the palm, you may need to support
it for several months with guy wires (padded or encased in garden hose).
The plant should be able to move a little, not be rigidly supported.
When it's settled in, you can fertilise with organic fertiliser, and maybe
add some root hormone.  Water depending on the weather, don't overwater.
