A jar or bucket (depending on your enthusiasm) about half-filled with water and with a bit of dishsoap works beautifully too. I pick up the snails by the shells and drop them in. Slugs I use the trowel on. If I ever manage to get out there at night I'll probably do it with a bucket so the extra dirt from picking up slugs doesn't fill up the jar. Good for you for not using poison! Even if I weren't an organic gardener I'd avoid it...nearly lost my dog to it in High School...several dogs in the neighborhood did die after one person put one spreading of snail bait out.
