Don't be too hasty about giving up on some of the hairier oreganos.  I would 
offer this tidbit.  I currently have growing in my gardens (some are up to 
2 feet tall) and I don't think you can say your summers exceed ours in heat 
and humidity in Houston, TX.

Greek Oregano, Italian Oregano, Origanum maru, Turkestani (O.v. gracile), 
Golden Oregano (O.v. 'aureum').  Another Origanum species I have is Sweet 
marjoram.  I believe the Greek Oregano is a pretty hairy species and very
nice culinary oregano.
