Just wanted to chime in that when I was in the mountains near San
Luis Potosi and Zacatecas, Mexico last fall many echevarias (not sure
which species) were growing in the cracks of the old, decaying rock
walls. They seemed to thrive despite the fact that there must have
been very little soil in these crevices 6-8 feet above the ground.
They were blooming there in Sep. and were very charming against the
ochre rocks. I would indeed imagine that they require very good
drainange. They must also be somewhat frost tolerant since it snows
up there from time to time.
