RE: Cordyline

Hi All,
I have been following this thread and was recalling work I was
doing with C. fruticosa (terminalis). In the late 80's a new insect was
introduce to Hawaii, Sophonia (Pseudonirvana) rufofasciata, we called it
the two spotted leafhopper. It's feeding caused premature yellowing, red
orange streaking on C. fruticosa. This group of leafhoppers are found
through out the asian region. I forgot how many different hosts we ended
up listing. IT would also cause interveinal yellowing on many dicots, that
was similar to a nutritional defiency. It got us looking into other
similar problems in Cordyline and found out about a dieback in NZ on the
Cabbage Trees. Apparently this was being caused by a Mycoplasms Like
Organism (MLO or phytoplasma) being spread by a planthopper. Again there
was yellowing, loss of vigor and eventually death. In short any bugs on
these plants? I suspect by now the Sophonia has gottten a hold in CA. It
was intercepted there and that was what alerted Agriculture people over
here....
