'The Walkers' (is it Rachel or Gordon?! I'm confused...) mentioned S.
frutescens. The mention reminds me to ask: does anyone have any
practical experience of the differences under cultivated conditions
between S. frutescens and S. montana? Particularly: floriferousness
and hardiness. I can't overwinter S. f. outside here (too wet rather
than too cold, I think) but was told S.m. would be a touch hardier and
so perhaps a better bet for me. I only have a couple of plants,
though, and don't dare try them in the ground until they've flowered
and set seed for insurance. Last year, they grew vigorously but didn't
flower at all, whereas S.f. usually flowers in its first year (and can
indeed - and very effectively - be treated as a shrubby annual). Can I
expect flowers on S.m. THIS year??
