Re: An un-nerving yet rewarding time of year.

wow dave, sounds like a beautiful time of year in your garden!

Anyway my own garden isnt even close to being that nice. I recently am
digging up all the weeds that have overgrown the open spaces in the
front yard. I must say, the sand thats left looks much nicer.
Unfortunately i will have all kinds of burr-clover coming up when it
gets some water (There's thousands of those burrs in the sand). Burr
clover is unfortunately such a vigorous weed. I would have gotten to
the yard sooner if i didnt have school =). Anyway for right now, the
yeard looks quite nice with just sand. My Prunus cerassifera is doing
quite well. Its grown a bit higher, and with all the weeds cleared away
it looks wonderful by itself in the yard. I did move my Nandina
domestica to a new spot to fill in an empty spot in the garden. My
Stipa giganteas are all flowering, with 6 foot high inflorescences. I
also dug up and devided the native needle grass (its a stip species,
i'm not sure which type though) I had, and transplanted its seedlings.
I have found their foliage wilts if transplanted, but does recover from
it. They're sending out new blades of grass.

We are also finally getting around to buying the river rock for the dry
stream bed, and a few large rocks. So it will look much nicer when that
happens. I'm also planning on buying a few low growing Manzanita
(Arctostaphylos sp.) for the now bare spots in the yard, and maybe a
couple of Ceanothus'. I also want to get a couple of Dietes to line the
banks of the dry stream (its a common plant, but i do love the flowers,
and it gets buy with little water, always a plus!).

I have also germinated a few Mimulus aurantiacus (Sticky Monkey Flower)
plants, and those will go by the neighbors chain link fence to cover
that up. I was a little surprised they germinated because the seed
capsules i got the seeds from weren't all that ripe. My neighbor was
also willing to give me some of her Yarrows ( I refused because i need
to get the more permanent plants in first), because they are spreading
out. Her yard looks quite nice, and has a few native lupines that are
currently in bloom (i hope i can get seed). So, i think this year i
will actually get the yard all together. Now all i have to worry about
is getting the rest of the yard dug up and watch for weeds.
