I've never seen an illustration of Greek gardens in any book. They seem to
stop short at Italy. I don't know why this is. If I remember rightly you are
in Crete. I'm sure there must be a lot to see there.
On the island of Tinos, Cyclades, there are many lovely gardens, balconies,
flower covered terraces. My own gardens are on view through wrought iron
gates, and I like them to be as green and flowery as possible to make up for
the dusty-brown of the surrounding countryside in high Summer, which hurts the
eyes if you see too much of it.
This may not be quite in the "philosophy" of the mediterranean garden, since
it requires a lot of recycled water and effort to coddle the plants which
might not otherwise choose to be there, but the passers-by seem to like it and
so do I.
Here's a poem you may remember from schooldays.
A garden is a lovesome thing, God wot.
Rose plot,
Fringed pool,
Ferned grot,
And yet the fool declares that God is not.
Not God? In gardens when the eve is cool?
Nay, but I have a sign,
'Tis very sure God walks in mine.
