Isabel, Sorry that I don't know of a source, but you
are not the only person who covets this plant! I
think that this was an introduction by Dr. Dennis
Breedlove, and know that it was named for Dr. Mildred
Matthias, who was associated with UCLA and their
botanic garden. If memory serves, it comes from
southern Mexico cloudforests, either Oaxaca or
Chiapas. Roger Raiche is one of the few people who is
growing it, and is responsible for its planting at the
new Strybing Entry Garden. It may have received a
write up in one of the back issues of Pacific
Horticulture Magazine. I don't recall whether this
plant is best from seed or cuttings. You might call
Strybing or Berkeley Botanic Garden and ask if they
are propagating this plant.
