Hi and welcome to a fellow-Kiwi. Although the Wellington area is not
truely Med. in climate it does at least grow Med bulbs and  a few of the
characteristic shrubs very well indeed, especially on exposed sunny
banks of which we seem to have plenty!! I also greatly enjoy the
friendly atmosphere and the enthusiasm of people on this list. Could we
perhaps know your name and maybe some plants which particularly interest
you? "Sap. wpk" is a trifle impersonal <G>

Re your comments/queries. A live oak is simply any Quercus species which
is evergreen.

As you correctly say the scientific name of columbine is Aquilegia.
However "Granny-bonnet"  is not a general term but can be accurately
applied only to those old-fashioned dumpy (European) types with short
curved spurs at the back of each flower. Other varieties with long spurs
(mainly derived from American species) don't look much like bonnets at
all.
