Dear Sean,
About 12 years ago we grew summergrowing gladiolus in commercial
quantities. One species 'Priscilla' still returns in this field as a
weed and flowers amongst other farmcrops. It is rare that gladiolus
hybrid persist like that and I firmly recommend this one as 'tough and
easy'.
Priscilla:Its base colour is apricot with dark pink blotches and ruffled
edges.
Frienship(white form) is an other cultivar that persists but to a lesser extend.
As a wintergrowing glad try Gladiolus communis ssp byzantinus and you
will be with you forever.

Can anyone suggest a US source for Gladiolus tristis and other
species gladiolus?

In fact the same can be said for G tristis which can spread rapidly by
its small bulbils. Flowersize bulbs are available here from July to
end of october.
