Hi David,
No, my Salvia verticillata 'Purple Rain' s grow pretty much in full sun,
at least through the middle of the day. And they get watered by hand
about once a week (maybe 8 or 9 days) during the growing season.
If they go for a longer time, they start to look ratty. But I find I can
cut them back, mulch and soak at any time in order to renew them. What
about trying Heliotropum arborescens (the species,+not+ any named
hybrids)? That takes north shade for me and doesn't get much water now
that it is 3 years old. The soft lavender color complements anything and
the fragrance in summer is great! I'm in SS zone 19 and the heliotrope
burns a little from frost, but recovers soon enough.
I'm interested in your experience growing alstromerias in that much
shade. I found when I planted one close to my east facing fence and
surrounded by other perennials, it grew lanky and bloomed sparcely.
Still there, but not doing its best.
Jan
