Sorry Tim, I meant to say that Astelias
can't all be grown from seed! In my excitement at finding a fellow sufferer
I mixed my cues up. Then I got excited again thinking you meant Astelias could
be grown from cuttings. Sighh.
Question: do you grow your Astelias on a mound to
enhance the drainage? And do you use a gritty soil mix?
To frustrate you with it's unavailability here is a
description of A. Alpina from Wrigley and Fagg "Aust. Native Plants"....Rosettes
of silvery sword shaped leaves surround insignificant inflorescence and showy,
red, edible berries. Clumps of rosettes may reach 60cms in diam. but rarely more
than 15cms high. Prop. by division; seed is worth trying if
available.
Sounds good huh?
Oz also has 5 species of Dracophyllum [no
Ming].......we have D.minimum, D. milliganii, D. sayeri, D.secundum and
D.fitzgeraldii. W &F say seed germinates readily but the seedlings are slow
and difficult. They all seem to like cool and moist situations. Sounds like a
job for Supertim!
Margaret.
