Title: Mediterranean peonies
Nick,
You might also include 'Molly's Witch', P. mlokosewitschii, single pale yellow with apricot edges and rounded bluish leaves turning beautiful fall colours.  It is native of the SE Caucasus, specifically the valley of Logodeki.  It likes open sunny slopes of the hornbeam/oak forest there.  It's bloom period is very short, only a few days, but might do well in southern areas because the buds are vulnerable to late frosts even though it is very cold-hardy.

Subject: Mediterranean peonies

There are at least 10 species of peony native in the Mediterranean region. Here's a brief digest. While doing a little web searching I came across an intriguing website with many pictures http://www.paeon.de/ (a little German may help).

P. broteroi - Portugal & Spain - red
P. cambessedesii - Balearic Islands - pink-red
P. clusii - Crete, Karpathos & Rhodes - white, rarely pinkish
P. coriacea - Corsica, Sardinia, Spain & Morocco - red
P. cypria - Cyprus - red
P. mascula - Mediterranean region - white to pink to red
P. officinalis - Mediterranean region - pink to red
P. parnassica - Mt. Parnassos, Greece - blackish red
P. peregrina - E Mediterranean region - red
P. tenuifolia - SW Europe, W Asia - fennel-like leaves, red flowers
