Re: plants under pines

Toyon factoid that intrigues me:
Heteromeles arbutifolia is native in California and
Baja California's mediterranean climate zone, and then
down in the southernmost mountain range of Baja, above
Cabo San Lucas and La Paz, where the rainy season is
distinctly summer.
Another intriguing thing about Toyon is that it shows
the island effect in fruit size and even leaf
serration: Guadalupe and Channel Islands strains have
(or had, where extinct) larger fruit and smoother
leaf-edges, plus larger dimensions overall.
As for its adaptability to growing beneath Pinus
radiata, I think I've seen it in habitat growing
underneath Monterey Pines, and judging from its
ability to survive under Eucalyptus globulus, it's at
least worth a try, barring deer infestation.
