Usually I just absorb all the information. I don't have much to
contribute except to toss in a query every now and then. And I am still
recovering from too much food over the recent Thanksgiving holidays.
What are my gardening plans for the winter?
I am going to channel all those holiday calories into a frenzy of
gardening this weekend. The rains have come to California and the
concrete (aka clay soil) in the backyard is nice and soft. Time to
flatten out all the lumps in the yard, pop in or transplant the california
natives and mediterranean plants, and then plaster the entire area with
newspapers and mulch to
kill off (not that they ever really die) all that bermuda grass. My
vision of bees and butterflies feasting on flowers and tall filmy plants
fluttering in the breeze will see me through the winter :) unless the bad
drainage/compacted soil kills off my plants before summer.
by the way, for those trying the newspaper mulch technique in southern
california, I've found that the L.A. Weekly decomposes very nicely
(besides being abundant and free). The Los Angeles Times turns to
cardboard on me.
