So far, 6+.  The newspapers come folded over (so that's already two
layers) and  I just lay them around the bed, making overlapping layers.  I
started doing this after the no-till discussion on this list and it has
worked pretty well.  I've tried this over drip irrigation and the soil in
that bed has stayed fluffy and moist even in summer when other areas have
turned to concrete.  The grass doesn't poke through the newspapers
(however, bulbs will) but they never die as they will grow through where
the bulbs have made an opening in the newspaper.  When I repaper the bed,
I find that the bermuda grass is very easy to pull out in long segments.
Nothing kills this stuff but at least they don't take over.
