Hello,
I just went to a nursery today and saw two very unusual trees. One was Chorisia speciosa, floss silk tree, and the other was Brachychiton populneus. Has anyone grown either of these or know about their care, etc?
I must have the Chorisia, (they only had this available in a 24 inch box - which will cost a pretty penny) - the nursery has one planted out front and it was so striking with its spined green trunk and green limbs. It is just setting buds to flower. The Brachychiton populneus, bottle tree, was available in a 5 gallon size. If I remember correctly, I believe I saw a full grown Brachychiton at the Huntington gardens in Los Angeles a few years back and the huge bottle trunk was really spectacular.
There are so many wonderful plants out there.
Hi Linda
I have not grown either of these trees myself, but if you want the Brachychiton known as the Bottle Tree my books say you need B rupestre. this is borne out by Beverly Eischer writing from Perth, who really does know what she is talking about, but as her computer date is all wrong (t was saying this morning the year was 2002) you just possibly might not have got the posting or it might be buried deep in your correspondence file, so I am quoting what she said below
"Linda, make sure you get the right Brachychiton. Normally, B. populneum/s or Kurrajong is a nice, medium sized tree (but can become a woody weed in some places) whilst B. rupestre is the bottle tree. However, the nurseries often get the names confused I expect".
