Re: "It" trees - Metrosideros

Someone brought in a plant in a 5 gallon pot, supposedly a year old Metrosideros grown from seed a friend sent him from New Zealand. He has about a dozen of them. I know some trees have juvenile leaves completely different from the adult ones, and I don't know what a young Metrosideros should look like, but it looks like some kind of Potentilla to me. Is there any possibility that he may be nurturing what he thinks he is?

If not, is there a Potentilla - like plant that is native to New Zealand?

Of course, all will be revealed when it flowers, and if it is herbaceous, that may be next year.
