Re: Jacaranda & Bauhinia

The town I saw these two trees growing in is Porterville which is on the valley floor between Fresno and Bakersfield.  Porterville gets a lot of fog in the winter and is very hot and dry in the summer.  The Jacaranda is planted on the west side of someone's house, actually quite close, which probably does afford it a lot of protection.  The Bauhinia is planted at a campground off of Highway 190, along the Tule River watershed, out in the open.  It does get early morning sun which probably helps in the winter.  This particular Bauhinia is suckering from the bottom and I am not sure if this a normal characteristic, if someone severely pruned it, or perhaps it died back in a severe frost and came back that way - no telling, but even as a very tall shrub it is very striking in bloom.  If the shrubby characteristic is inherent, then it would be a good (but large) screen.
