I might save you a bit of trouble with this one, it is
best with warm winters, and is not successful here in
northern California, which I think is more similar to
your location than southern California, where this can
be grown in areas that don't freeze, yet get hot
enough in summer to get it to bloom. I have seen it
in habitat in southern Mexico, where it is gorgeous,
but it may also be helpful to know that it grows in
areas that are only dry in winter, with summer rains.
It is quite common in the ruins just outside the city
of Oaxaca, but also occurs over a large part of
southern Mexico, including more desert areas, where it
is so stunted by comparison, one might not recognize
it as the same plant.
