Vireyeas are Rhododendrons, they are just the tropical varieties.

They want moisture and warmth; a Mediterranean climate would probably be
much too dry for them. Around here (Seattle), they are greenhouse plants.
The Rhododendron Species Foundation near Federal Way, WA, grows lots of
them.
