Dear Doug,
Kees and I grow a few Vireyas. Most we have in a mini-climate, well
protected by swimming pool environs. But we do have two growing in the
earth in general garden. Tasmania is the cool temperate state of
Australia.
The swimmimg pool vireyas are planted in cut up man ferns [not cut by
yours truly, think it is an awful thing to do but if I don't buy them,
it will not stop the practice] - which proves the tolerance fr less
water than would be supposed.
Australia has only 1 native Rhododendron and that is a vireya "Lochae"
but the cultivation of V. has become very popular, in Aussie, in the
last 8 years. Most come from New Guinea or Java and the growers here,
in Australia, have become very busy creating new hybrids.
If you like to go to the link in my signature, Suite101, today and
follow link to Tasmanian Garden Journal - discussions - you will see a
couple of letters re Vireyas. My article is due to change on November
1st, USA time, and in the new article I have placed a photo of one of
the Vireyas flowering now. You can read past articles and letters by
clicking articles after you are in my latest Tasmanian Garden Journal
article.
Vireyas flower for much longer period than other Rhododendron and may
come out at various times of the year.
Regards to all,
