One useful way I've found to keep ants and aphids off my fruit trees is
to apply a barrier coating of 'Tree Tanglefoot' to the base of the
trunks. 'Tree Tanglefoot' is a non-toxic exceedingly viscous substance,
easily applied with a paint brush, which no ant will cross. Most N.
American nursery supply houses stock this.
In time, of course, airborne debris and grass cuttings will adhere to the
coating, forming 'bridges' that the ants can walk upon. But the coating
is easily renewable and it does work as long as one is vigilant about
keeping the coating fresh.
