Thanks to all who wrote with advice for controlling ants and aphids.  The
three most popular suggestions seemed to be:  1. Do nothing; 2. Plant
Tanacetum vulgare; and 3. Apply Tanglefoot to the trunk.  While I am naturally
and constitutionally inclined to the first suggestion, the other two seem
equally simple and environmentally friendly.  Thanks again to all who
responded!
