Sean:
There is a wonderful specimen of a double white Brugmansia candida next to the
Santa Cruz County courthouse. I will never forget the first time I saw that
plant. It was in the evening, and the scent was almost overpowering. The
plant was completely covered with those huge, pendant flowers. I hate to
admit it, but I picked one and took it with me! This particular plant is only
available in the trade from Monterey Bay Nursery (wholesale). I should
mention their excellent website at www.montereybaynsy.com. They've got great
pictures and cultural information on every plant they sell.
Also in Santa Cruz, in the backyard? of a Victorian house near the
intersection of Mission and Walnut, there is (or used to be) a spectacular
ancient purple-ish Bouganvillea that had grown some 60 feet up a coast redwood
tree. An unforgettable sight when in bloom. The tree stood all by itself
near the base of a hill, and as you turned down Walnut from Mission, it
definitely caught your eye. In Santa Barbara, there is an historic (and
enormous) Moreton Bay Fig tree. I'm not sure of the exact location, but it is
something of a landmark all by itself.
