I bought saffron crocus last fall and planted them late. They were already
sprouting and they grew a bit more before going dormant. They're in a bed
that gets zero summer water.
We had 3 times our normal rainfall last winter...you'll never get that much
in SoCal...and I'm happy to say that about 1/2 to 2/3 of the saffron is
just coming up now (the others may be late or they may be goners...don't
know yet).
They are meditarianen plants so give them those conditions. Winter rains.
Decent drainage. No summer water (they'll be dormant...i.e., invisable).
Full sun.
I've never seen them sold in pots...guess that's cause it's a bit late to
plant them now (you still can do it...I did last Novemeber...but the
traditional month is August).
Enjoy them.
