Hi all, First id like to welcome our new member from South Africa.
Anyways, im wondering is there any plants that do well in the median
strips between the street and sidewalks? Id need something low, or
easily kept low, and i dont want anything that would spread easily by
cuttings (meaning if i take the weed trimmer to it, and a branch gets
somewhere else it wont root =) ). IE: NOT iceplant! :).
ALso i am interested in Baptisia australis. Good points? Bad Points? I
especially like the color of its flowers and its leaves (Not to mention
its perrenial and bushy). I saw a packet of seeds at Orchard Supply
Hardware, so im interested now!
As for my garden, i moved my Stipa gigantea plants around to line a
path. When they fill out theyll cover up bare spots. Also i moved my
Miscanthus plants, so hopefully in spring theyll fill out. I kind of
have a grass garden area now (Stipa gigantea, Pennisetum setaceum,
Miscanthus Sinensis "zebrinus", Miscanthus sinensis "Yaku Jima"). My
Microlepia ferns are doing well. Since i cut them back theyre no longer
gangly looking (Quite pretty under the juniper "tree" i have). They
also do well without lots of water, and they didnt even die out during
the summer when i didnt water them. Unfortunately Sunset says theyre a
bit frost sensitive. The superficial frosts we get doesn't really
damage them, save a few burnt leaflet tips. I also moved the Abutilon
so it can get a little more water (it was lush with winter rains, but
drops a lot of leaves when it gets dry). The bit of fall color i do
have in my garden comes from my Nandina, which is a bright fiery red
color, actually looks quite nice. I would like a few more, so i can get
some berries next time it flowers.
anyways thats about it!
