Re: Big Slugs


I enjoyed Bob Beer's description of banana slugs, both ripened and
unripened.  He did make one slip: the species is _Ariolimax columbiana_.
"Aerolimax" HAS come to mind on a couple of occasions, though.  This slug
occasionally rappels down from the rain forest canopy on a strand of
slime!

This mollusc has been adopted as something of a counter-culture symbol,
from Santa Cruz to British Columbia, but somehow escaped attention from
Native Americans.  I've never seen a totem pole with tentacles!

I've abused this thread long enough that I won't discuss the banana slug's
unusual sex life.  Private inquiries are welcome, however.
