Washing off the slime is easier said than done. I made the mistake of
handling one, once, and it took repeated scrubbing with Comet cleanser to get
that slime off my hands! The intramural soccer teams at UC Santa Cruz are
also called the Banana Slugs, and there was a big uproar recently over the
proposal to change the name to something a little more athletic-sounding (for
example, Sea Lions). The Bay Tree Bookstore on campus undoubtedly has the
world's largest selection of Banana Slug merchandise. For medit-gardeners in
Northern California, a trip to the UCSC arboretum is worthwhile in its own
right. They specialize in Australian species, and have introduced many
varieties to the nursery trade. The campus is one of the most beautiful in
the world, with the best views of Monterey Bay to be had from anywhere.
Banana slugs are common in the redwood forest on campus (they're particularly
active during rainy weather) and you will find banana slug souvenirs in the
bookstore to suit every taste.
