When I first moved into my house in 1977, my street (for blocks, on both
sides) had many huge mature Acacias. Now there are perhaps 2 left in the
whole 6-block stretch. The city had to gradually take them all down as they
began breaking off large, mature limbs...and even splitting down the middle
of the trunk. Apparently, at least here, they grow to full size, mature,
and start coming apart rather quickly. (By way of comparison, the (Norway
or Sugar) maple in front of my house was also a big, mature tree in 1977,
and it is still in place and has only broken off one branch bigger than 3"
across.

So I say, get rid of it! And if the city refuses to cooperate, send them a
registered letter (with several copies to various appropriate people)
stating your concern and that you will expect them to pay for any damage
the tree causes if they refuse to let you take it down. That was how
property owners here got the city to get rid of those dangerious Acacias.
