Low hedge for shade

Hi Nancy,

My favorite low hedge plant is Myrsine africana (African Boxwood). I've
used it in many difficult places and it's always performed well. Even
though the references say it gets 3' to 8', I've found it's slow
growing, especially in the shade. If you start clipping it early, it
will stay to the 1', 2', or 3' height you select.

It's moderately drought tolerant after it gets established, but you'll
have to irrigate faithfully at first, especially if it's competing with
the deodora's roots.

It's also easy to propagate by the methods described in the propagation
thread. So. if you're patient, you can create hundreds of small plants
from a few bought ones. Then you can plant closer than I did (10"
apart).

Cheers, Jan
