Go after the weeds as soon as they come up! I hoe or pull them, depending on
the type of weed. Also, I do replacement planting with ground covers or
other plants that will choke out the weeds. Of course, as you say, MULCH.
My yard has relatively few weeds now.
There was one season when I bought a wildflower seed mix. One of the
"wildflowers" was a pernicious plant with tiny flowers and millions of seeds.
I didn't realize what was happening until the seed pods had dried. The
seeds shot everywhere as I tried to eradicate the plant. It took a few
seasons to get rid of the problem. Now, as soon as I see anything that looks
suspicious, I yank it out ASAP. That was how I pulled out all of my
sunflower seedlings one year. I thought they were weeds!
