Nan,
A couple of comments about Ficus pumila (Creeping fig):
1)I think it wouldn't like a South or West exposure in full sun next to the
freeway in San Diego-way too hot. An East or North exposure would probably work
ok.
2)It must be pruned hard regularly (at least every two years),that is, shaved to
the wall or cut to the ground, if you want to keep the juvenile foliage. This
vine gets very woody if allowed to develop mature growth. The mature growth is
very heavy and on a 20 foot wall you could expect an unpruned mass of it to peel
off
in a good earthquake. (yes, been there, done that,it wasn't fun!)
3)Mature plants will develop a thick trunk and
I doubt that the little holes they left in the concrete would do, but if cut to
the ground every few years it would work.
4)If it's well maintained it's beautiful! Will the City or Cal-Trans
commit the resources to it's maintenance if they choose to plant it???
