David, Lauw: Thanks for comments. I'll let you know how I get on with
the new spp from Kirstenbosch. I also have an unnamed sp from Simon
Goodenough at Ventnor Botanic Garden on the Isle of Wight, which has
come through one winter outside perfectly ok.

Lauw: A. ecklonii has come through at least four winters here, with
lots of wet and several (mild and short-lived) frosts, so I should
have thought with you it would be ok in the ground. And I agree, here,
too, it seems to appreciate moisture and semi-shade, not full sun and
whatever not-very-close approximation to baking I can provide. As I
understand it from Silverhill's catalogue notes, many of the aristeas
come from stream-side or wet gully situations, in fact, so presumably
don't resent our wet UK west coast winters as much as many S. Africans
do.
