David: The outstanding book on Australian plants for UK and European
gardeners, at least, is Jeff Irons and Thomas Ross, Australian Plants,
A Guide To Their Cultivation in Europe. It was privately published as
a memorial to Thomas R., who died sadly young four or five years ago.
It's a massive (350pp or so) and handsomely produced hardback but very
realistically priced (around £25 sterling). So far as I know it's
still available and you can get copies direct from Jeff Irons. His
address is: Stonecourt, 74 Brimstage Road, Heswall, Wirral, CH60 1XQ -
but he's off to....Lebanon or Iran, I think it is, in a few days until
around the beginning of December, so you probably won't get a reply
until then.
I've had a complete mental blackout re Harry Hay's whereabouts, except
that they're south-of-London! In my own defence, it's been years since
I was there. Somewhere in the house I have the information. I will
look it out but it may take me a little time. He is an intensely
private person who, to the best of my knowledge, never travels, never
gives talks, never gives lectures, never writes, never sells plants.
He just grows the darn things - better than almost anyone else and
more of'em than almost anyone else. A cobbler who sticks to his last!
Best wishes
Tim
