Virus Problems
I moderate a list of over 1100 members on the subject of a particular
cat health problem and we house our mail list with the largest of the
public mail list providers ---www.eGroups.com.
The advantages include:
--All messages are archived on a Web site-- with search ability --
that members only to access at any time.
-- Groups can be completely private, no listing within the company's
listing if that is desired.
-- Options to subscribe just via the Web site if you are too busy to
receive individual messages or digests.
-- Large storage capacity to store files of any type such as links,
reference documents and photographs.
-- The ability to conduct polls among membership on various subjects.
Of particular advantage is the option not to allow attachments. If
sent by a member, they simply aren't transmitted. This has kept us
from falling victim to any number of virus attacks. On the other
hand, allowing people to post photos and other material on the Web
site allows for material to be shared without the attachment problem.
We had been at college more or less under the sponsorship of a vet
school but our numbers got too large. The search for a new "home" was
done by our owner who managed the IS department for that particular
college and eGroups was the best choice found. The change was not
without pain but over time 99% of the people have said that the
advantage -- especially archive search and file storage -- have been
worth the trouble to change.
It's something to think about for this group. Not advocating we do it
-- now -- but it may be worth considering for the future.
