Re: Haemanthus albiflos

We also grow there Haemanthus coccineus and sanguineus in the full
ground which need acompletely different position; They are winter
growers needing a dry summer rest and a sunny position. They can be
grown in pots or in full ground in the coastal areas. This year we had
a very generous flowering in Cassis with an abundant production of the
seedberries. The very spectacular bright red flowers appear before the
leaves at the end of August and september (late summer). During the
winter the enormous leaves continue to expand 15cm wide and upto 60cm long.

I've found that these actually don't need summer dormancy. I've got them in
positions, both in the ground & in the nursery, where they get full summer
watering. They have a later leaf loss period but still flower perfectly
well. It extends the range of their use quite well. They do grow OK in a
sunny spot, but I associate them with shade. Maybe thats because they self
seed & grow there more readily. In some forest floor areas they provide the
most wonderous sight when flowering in late summer. A complete carpet of
pointillistic red dots against the rocks & litter.
