Speaking, I think, for quite a few friends - we are using
Australian species (and hybrids) because (1) deer and gophers don't touch many
of them (2) they do not need much water and almost none in our summers (3) they
are low maintenance (4) their blooms are unusual, beautiful, and many attract
hummers and bees (5) and they have few if any pests or diseases. So we can
create beautiful gardens and avoid all the problems that most gardeners have in
this part of California (Santa Cruz County).The UCSC Arboretum is responsible
for introducing many of these plants into the trade over the past 24
